Clingendael welcomes Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren
The Clingendael Institute was delighted to welcome Alberto van Klaveren, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, for a special lecture on Chile's foreign policy in a changing world.
The Minister's visit marked 200 years of diplomatic ties between Chile and the Netherlands, as well as 10 years of training Chilean diplomats at Clingendael Academy. Born in Amsterdam in 1948 and emigrated to Chile in 1950, Minister van Klaveren — fluent in Dutch and an alumnus of Leiden University — brought a personal dimension to this moment. In his keynote speech, Minister van Klaveren reflected on shared democratic values and the believe in multilateralism in today’s turbulent geopolitical climate and loss of faith in institutions. He shared Chile’s priorities in areas such as sustainable energy, combating organised crime, ocean governance and the exploitation of critical raw materials such as copper and lithium.
This event was co-organised with the Embassy of Chile in the Netherlands, and was opened by Christiaan Rebergen, Secretary General of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and moderated by Ron Ton, Director of Clingendael Academy. More than eighty attendees from across diplomacy, universities, business, and government joined the conversation.
