Clingendael Academy hosts 10th edition of UNSC negotiations training
In October 2025, the 10th edition of the Clingendael Negotiations Training for diplomats from the newly elected member states to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) took place in New York.
The countries Bahrein, Latvia, Liberia, The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Colombia will be on the UNSC for the 2026-2027 period. The aim of the training is to enhance participants’ negotiation skills specifically in the UNSC context.
During three days of interactive training, participants practiced different negotiation dynamics in several smaller exercises, which together built up to a simulation of a multilateral UNSC resolution negotiation on the last training day. In addition, participants analysed their own negotiation style, discussed how to deal with deadlocks in negotiations, and analysed and practiced with the legal implications of specific phrasing in UNSC resolution negotiations.
Traditionally, one of the highlights of the training was the contribution of alumni of the training that currently work in the UNSC. In a speed dating format, participants could pose all their pressing questions which led to exchanges on the content and sharing best practices on work processes.
Clingendael Academy looks back on a vibrant and engaging training and wishes the participants best of luck with their work for the UNSC.
