Frequently Asked Questions about our internship programme

Are you interested in an internship at the Clingendael Institute and looking for more information? Below you’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions about our internship programme. 

 

What kind of internships do you offer?

We offer internships across all three of our departments: Research, Academy, and Supporting Staff.

  • Research: You will support researchers within the unit you apply for.
  • Academy: You will assist with the trainings offered by Clingendael Academy, including both open enrolment courses and tailor-made programmes.
  • Supporting Staff: This department offers internships in areas such as Human Resources, Marketing Communications and Finance. 
 
How long are the internships?

Internships at the Clingendael Institute last 5 to 6 months. 

 
Do you offer short or part-time internships?

No, we only offer fulltime internships with a duration of 5 to 6 months. 

 
Do you offer thesis or graduation internships?

No, we do not offer graduation or thesis internships. Our internships are hands-on and focused on practical experience. Interns are fully integrated into their teams and contribute to day-to-day work. 

 
Do I need a background in International Relations?

No, a background in International Relations is not required. We welcome applicants from all study disciplines. 

 
Can I submit an open application?

No, we do not process open applications. All available internship positions are published on our career portal, where you can apply directly. 

 
Are internships paid?

Yes, our internships are paid. The compensation depends on the number of hours you work. Both the hours and the compensation are listed in each vacancy. 

 
Do I have to be a student to apply, or can I also be a recent graduate?

You must be enrolled in a higher education institution at the time you apply and when you start your internship. We do not offer internships to candidates who have already graduated. 

 
Do you accept applications from non-EU students?

Yes, non-EU citizens can apply for internships at the Clingendael Institute. However, you must already have the necessary documentation to study or work in the Netherlands before applying and starting your internship. We do not provide assistance with obtaining a visa. 

 
Do I need to speak Dutch?

Not all internships require Dutch language skills. Language requirements differ per position and are stated in each vacancy. 

 
What does the application process look like?

You apply for an internship through the ‘Apply’ button on the vacancy page. After the application deadline has passed, we review all applications. If your profile matches the criteria, you will be invited for an interview. Depending on the position, this may be followed by a skills assessment related to the tasks of the internship.

When do internship vacancies open?

Internship recruitment takes place twice a year: in December–January and May–June.
