ASEAN officials and diplomats deepen regional cooperation on AI diplomacy

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly reshaping international affairs, creating both new opportunities and complex challenges for professionals working in diplomacy. In December 2025, our team delivered a four‑day online AI Diplomacy Training for officials and diplomats from ASEAN member states. The programme brought together diplomats engaged in both policy and technical dimensions of AI, contributing to ASEAN’s collective efforts to advance responsible and trustworthy AI governance.

Over the course of four days, participants explored the opportunities and risks associated with AI, as well as its implications for national security and regional cooperation. The programme introduced the foundations of AI governance in both the civil and the military domain, followed by sessions on the evolving disinformation landscape. A dedicated module focused on the use of AI for diplomacy and the ways in which AI is transforming the daily work processes of diplomats.

Throughout the training, participants engaged in an online assignment that challenged them to apply the insights from the sessions to their own regional and organisational contexts. Working in groups, they analysed the most pressing AI‑related risks for their institutions, assessed the benefits of existing AI governance instruments, and identified practical ways to mitigate risks or capitalise on AI opportunities in their day‑to‑day work.

The lively exchanges, openness and commitment of all participants created a rich learning environment and highlighted the value of regional collaboration. We extend our sincere thanks to the participants for their engagement and to our guest speakers for their expertise and valuable contributions.
