The ability to effectively negotiate in stressful circumstances is a skill which is essential to every humanitarian worker: from the field-based aid worker negotiating access on the frontline to the manager in headquarters talking to donors and governments. The Clingendael humanitarian negotiation training aims to enhance the negotiating capacity of humanitarian workers.

Our interactive four-day training introduces negotiation theory to help you in your practice. Through specially designed simulations and role plays, you can immediately apply the new acquired tools and insights. There is space for debriefing and learning from each other’s experience.

Is this course for you?

Profile of participants:

  • You are a humanitarian aid worker, working for a local, national or international humanitarian organisation;
  • You are regularly involved in humanitarian negotiations;
  • You have access to a stable internet connection and laptop for the entire course;
  • You have full working proficiency in English;
  • Your organisation supports your participation for the entire course via an endorsement letter.

When and how?

The training will be conducted online via Zoom from Monday 6 until Thursday 9 July between 09:30 and 17:00 o’clock CEST. The training language is English. Participants may be asked to conduct self-paced modules during the training in their own time. We make sure the course is interactive and includes sufficient breaks. Participants will receive a certificate after full attendance of the course. A stable internet connection is required to properly follow the training.

How to Register?

Prospective participants are requested to complete this electronic application form, which is automatically sent to the Clingendael course-coordinators. The application should be submitted in English. Note that relying on AI tools to fill the form’s questions may negatively affect your chances of being selected for the course. Deadline for registration is 14 June 23:59 CEST.

There is space for 20 humanitarian aid workers in this course. If we receive more applications, we will make a selection based on the profiles. There are no costs for registration and participation. This course is fully funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
