Strengthening Mediation Around the world: training for United Nations professionals
How can international organisations better support mediation processes incomplex conflict settings?
From 18 to 22 May 2026, the Conflict and Peace Negotiations Programme (CPNP) of the Clingendael Academy delivered its annual five-day course Enhancing Mediation: How to Support Mediation Processes More Effectively in The Hague, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The training brought together UN professionals from across agencies to strengthen their capacity to support mediation processes globally.
Tailored to mediation support professionals
The course is specifically designed for those working alongside mediators, or those who design and manage institutional structures that support (insider) mediators; often in complex, high-pressure environments where political, organisational, and interpersonal dynamics intersect.
Participants are working as (part of):
• UNDP (various countries)
• Peace and Development Advisors (PDAs)
• UN Women
• UN Department of Political Affairs and/or Department of Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO)
• Other UN entities including Office of the Special Envoy of a particular country, or a UN mission
Learning objectives and approach
The training focuses on strengthening both skills and strategic thinking. Participants work on:
• Supporting (insider) mediators from a third-party perspective
• Practicing negotiation and mediation techniques
• Navigating institutional constraints and stakeholder dynamics
• Designing and guiding mediation work and initiatives
A key feature of the course is Clingendael’s Strategic Choice Framework, which helps participants structure decision-making around process design and engagement strategies. Through simulations, peer exchange, and facilitated reflection, participants apply tools like this directly to real-world challenges.
What makes this training unique
• A strong focus on the third-party perspective and “support role” in mediation, often overlooked in traditional training
• Integration of practical tools and real-life scenarios
• A neutral and trusted space for cross-agency exchange
• Continuous adaptation based on insights from previous editions of the training and Clingendael’s partnership with UN agencies
A growing practice, built over time
This course is part of a broader and evolving line of work at Clingendael Academy. Over the past four years, we have developed and delivered mediation support trainings not only for the United Nations, but also for regional inter-governmental organisations working in conflict-affected contexts. This accumulated experience allows us to continuously refine our approach, ensuring it remains relevant to the changing demands of mediation practice.
Impact and outlook
Participants leave the training better equipped to contribute to effective, coherent mediation efforts within their organisations. Just as importantly, they make connections across UN entities that are essential in today’s interconnected peacebuilding landscape.
As demand for skilled mediation support continues to grow, Clingendael Academy is proud to bring these professionals together and remains committed to strengthening professional capacities and fostering collaboration across institutions.
