Lessons of the MH17 disaster

The MH17 disaster makes clear that the Netherlands should look beyond its short term interests and develop a long term view on its relations with Ukraine and Russia.

Russia presents Western democracies with a strategic challenge, but the widespread support in Ukraine for democratization and rule of law presents them with a strategic opportunity that should not be squandered. That requires deeper and longer term investment in international cooperation.
