Governing Europe: The Future Role of the European Commission

15 Mar 2006 - 00:00

This study provides an in-depth analysis of the role of the European Commission in the evolution of European integration from the beginning of the 1990s to the present day. It gives a detailed account of the Commission?s position in the institutional framework and its role as manager of the European Union?s policies. The study examines the twin challenge to the Commission in the form of on-going treaty reform in the context of the European Convention and changes in European governance. The study concludes that given the depth of these transformations, unfolding in parallel to an unprecedented enlargement of the Union to the East, the role of the Commission should be strengthened and its sources of legitimacy should be broadened.
