This November, Clingendael welcomed a group of 20 midcareer diplomats from Latin America and the Caribbean for a two-week training programme. 

The course aimed to provide participants with a clear understanding of global trends and broader policy debates in order to further foster regional cooperation on these topics, as well as enhance participants’ diplomatic skills. 

The programme was divided into two modules: International Order, Multilateralism & Diplomatic Skills, and Climate, Sustainability, & Economic Diplomacy. The modules mixed interactive lectures, such as on cyber diplomacy and global climate change governance, and skills workshops, including strategic analysis, intercultural communication and advanced negotiations skills. The participants also had the opportunity to get to know institutions in the Netherlands and expand their network through working visits to the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the International Criminal Court, and the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO). 

Clingendael Academy has been training diplomats from the Latin America and Caribbean region since 2015. This edition marks the very first cohort from the region to receive a diplomatic training programme on the midcareer level. Hence, we are especially proud to look back on this successful training programme.
