On 8 July 2024, the Clingendael Institute and Internet Society Netherlands (ISOC NL) hosted a multi-stakeholder meeting on digital sovereignty. The meeting aimed to identify concrete steps for governments, businesses and other stakeholders that flesh out the ambition of digital open strategic autonomy in cloud services.

The event brought together some 35 participants from government, business and civil society organisations at Huys Clingendael, plus around 100 participants online. The opening speech was held by Ruben Brave, Chairman of Internet Society Nederland. The panel discussion 'Digital sovereignty: sense or nonsense? ' was moderated by Maaike Okano-Heijmans, Programme Lead Tech & Digitalisation at Clingendael. The panel consisted of Bert Hubert, independent technology expert, Corinne Cath, University of Technology Delft, Martijn Lucassen, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, Paul Brand, Stratix and Diana Krieger, Soverin.

In the two workshops that followed, the in-Huys participants discussed the themes:

  1. Data Sovereignty: What do we want to protect?;
  2. Towards a European Beehive Cloud Megascaler.
