This month, the first edition of Clingendael’s diplomatic training programme for diplomats from the Pacific countries took place. In this one-week training 18 junior and mid-career diplomats further sharpened their diplomatic skills to address the core challenges of diplomacy in the 21st century.

The training was designed along the lines of three distinct themes to further underline 21st century challenges: economic globalisation, climate diplomacy, and multilateralism in a changing world order. Within this context, participants had to develop a Back Home Action Plan based on the knowledge and skills gained during the training. This resulted in fruitful discussions on the challenges and opportunities that the Pacific countries are currently facing. The participants defined their personal goals and concrete actions to explore how they can overcome these challenges or seize the opportunities in their role as diplomats.

While the implementation process of this action plan is still ongoing, we look back on a very successful first edition of this programme. We look forward to further sustain the relationship between the Clingendael Academy, the Netherlands and the Pacific countries.
