Between 26 April and 7 June, Clingendael Academy hosted a hybrid training programme for junior diplomats from Central Asia and Mongolia. A group of fourteen young diplomats from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia joined us both virtually, as well as in person to discuss topics related to diplomacy, stability, and prosperity.

This programme was one of the first to be organised in a hybrid form. The programme started with two online course days, in which the participants met one another, and were introduced to programme, The Netherlands, and the Clingendael Institute.

Mid May, the participants were physically welcomed at Clingendael. From then on, the focus was placed on several topics such as regional security, cooperation in Central Asia, EU-Asia relations, water scarcity and economic diplomacy. The group also worked on enhancing and strengthening several key skills including intercultural communication, cyber security, international negotiation, and performing a stakeholder analysis.

After saying goodbye in person to the participants, the course was not over yet.  The programme was finalized with three virtual post-course days in which the focus was placed on preparing back home action plans and working out how the newly gained knowledge and skills can be put into practice in their day-to-day work.

We look back at a very fruitful and successful hybrid training programme and look forward to many similar courses in the future.
