Training on fragility and resilience for African Development Bank

Clingendael Academy recently delivered an interactive online training for fragility analysts, Country Programme Officers, and Task Managers of the African Development Bank (AfDB). This three-module programme broadened participants' perspectives on fragility and resilience through political, economic, social, and gendered lenses.

The training refreshed participants' ability to use conflict analysis and conflict sensitivity tools while introducing Political Economy Analysis (PEA) and scenario-thinking methods. Participants applied these practical tools, designed to help participants analyse rapidly changing contexts, conduct risk assessments, and make informed decisions. By applying these methods through a fragility lens, participants enhanced their understanding of key uncertainties and their implications for development planning.

Case studies from the African continent, relevant to the AfDB’s work, grounded the learning in real-world examples. This offered participants insights into applying these tools to complex situations. The programme also introduced new trends and developments in fragility and resilience, to navigate this evolving field more effectively.

This training supports the African Development Bank’s mission to foster sustainable development by building the capacity of its staff to address the dynamic challenges of resilience and fragility across Africa.

This training was the first of its kind for the AfDB, and Clingendael hopes it will be the start of many more to support their vital work across the continent.
