Clingendael Academy has maintained a valuable relationship with Indonesia’s MFA and their Centre of Education and Training (CET) since 2004. We were therefore very honoured to have received the invitation to train high-level officials who will be (co-)chairing the G20 presidency in 2022. In total over one hundred chairs, co-chairs and conference officers participated in the trainings.

The training was divided over two batches, one in October and one in November 2021, and was held in a very extraordinary format. Clingendael trainers delivered the training virtually from one of the studios at the Clingendael Institute in the Hague, while the majority of participants followed the training from a beautifully decorated conference room in Bali, and others joined online.

Chairing multilateral meetings

The focus of the training was on effective chairing of a negotiated process. Through theory, cases and negotiation simulations, participants got acquainted with several tools, concepts and techniques applicable in a multilateral negotiation context. Experiences and best practices were also exchanged with the Independent Chairman of the FAO Council, Mr. Hans Hoogeveen.

Since there is a high likelihood that the G20 meetings are going to be held in a digital or hybrid format, the training also touched upon the dynamics and challenges with online or hybrid meetings. Tips and tricks were shared on how to facilitate this, but also how cultural differences play a role in the communication during multilateral meetings.

We can proudly look back on a very dynamic training that was organized in cooperation with the MFA of the Netherlands, the MFA of Indonesia and CET. We wish the chairs, co-chairs and conference officers all the best of luck in their presidency of the G20 next year.
