Fourteen mid-career diplomats from West Africa and the Sahel region came to the Clingendael Institute for a three-week training programme on regional cooperation. Throughout the course, the diplomats reflected on the existing and future challenges of West Africa and the Sahel and prospective policy responses regarding natural resources, peace and security, development policies, and good governance. In addition, they participated in several skill workshops, such as intercultural communication and negotiation, to enhance their diplomatic skillset.

The diplomats also paid a visit to Brussels, where they met with representatives from UNICEF, the OHCHR, the European Parliament, and the EEAS. The visit was concluded with an interactive discussion regarding cooperation mechanisms between the European Union and the African Union.

Through increased knowledge, making better use of regional cooperation channels and improved bilateral cooperation efforts, the diplomats can effectively contribute to promoting peace, security, and prosperity in their region.
