From 20 until 22 February, Clingendael Academy provided a three-day workshop on Digital Diplomacy for the Institut Diplomatique et des Relations Internationales (IDRI) of Algeria.

The workshop focused on outlining the different aspects of digital diplomacy, including:

  • Defining the scope of digital diplomacy
  • Information management & cyber security
  • Public diplomacy & social media
  • E-government & consular services

Throughout the three days, Clingendael Academy trainers discussed the consequences of digitalisation for Ministries of Foreign Affairs and diplomacy. The participants to this workshop analysed the online presence of various countries, and compared this to their own Ministry.

During the last day, they formulated policy goals for the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The diplomats developed strategic plans on how to implement their goals effectively. The results of the strategic plans will be presented to the Secretary-General through IDRI.

At the end of the workshop, one of the participants noted:

"I think this is the most important training a modern diplomat can have. We have to catch up with the rest of the world".
