Laurens van den Tempel is a researcher at Clingendael’s Conflict Research Unit (CRU). His work focuses on the interaction of political, economic, and security dynamics in fragile and conflict-affected environments, especially within the Greater Horn of Africa. He combines strong regional expertise with a keen thematic interest in private sector development and business operations in developing countries.  

Laurens’ analyses and recommendations build upon his practical experience in both policymaking and policy-relevant research. He previously worked at the European External Action Service and the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he similarly covered the Horn of Africa and gained actionable insights into diplomacy, foreign policy, geopolitics, development, and humanitarian action.

Laurens graduated summa cum laude from Sciences Po Paris with a master’s degree in International Governance & Diplomacy. He also holds a cum laude bachelor’s degree in Politics, Psychology, Law & Economics, including a minor in Conflict Studies, from the University of Amsterdam.
