Indonesian entry-level diplomats return for diplomatic training programme in Dutch spring
The Clingendael Academy welcomed 20 entry-level diplomats from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kemlu for a four-week training programme in May. Participants had a truly Dutch experience, from spending the first day in The Netherlands celebrating Kingsday to experiencing almost all types of the Dutch weather.
During their stay in the Netherlands, participants took part in an intensive four-week diplomatic training programme focused on the knowledge and skills needed in modern diplomacy. The programme explored what diplomacy looks like in a fast-changing world. Participants reflected on how international cooperation is evolving, how regional perspectives shape global challenges, and how diplomats can deal with emerging technologies.
The training combined lectures and practical sessions. Participants attended sessions on topics such as economic diplomacy, international security, and climate governance. In addition, they joined workshops to build their skills in negotiation, presentation, and policy reporting.
Learning extended beyond the classroom through working visits, where participants gained insight into the work of institutions such as the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deltares, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and various European bodies. One of the highlights of the programme was the visit to Brussels, where participants learned more about multilateral diplomacy up close.
It was a pleasure to host the participants in the Netherlands and at the Institute. We thank the participants for their commitment and engagement throughout the programme. The thoughtful contributions and open exchange of ideas created a dynamic learning environment, enriching the experience for all involved.
