Introduction

Learn how to promote your policy priorities

The competition for our attention has exploded in recent years, making it increasingly difficult to get voices heard and points across. In such a challenging environment, how can you as a professional advocate effectively and become an agent of change? How do I "translate" my organisation's priorities into other sectors? How can I learn to see through the campaigning of others to better relate to them? What can you do to make sure that your international partners support your efforts? If you want to learn more about the answers to these questions, this course is for you.

360 Degree Influencing

During the course, you will gain an understanding of why the Brexit campaign was so successful, how the communicative messaging behind the anti-smoking efforts by the Dutch government works, and what strategies organisations like War Child use to move people towards solidarity with children in armed conflict. You will see that advocacy is part and parcel of almost every political and administrative process, and that these campaigns make use of insights from human psychology, as well as solid strategic and analytical tools to bring their message across effectively.

Learning how to influence with impact is not done by following abstract theories and overly complicated models, but rather by applying practical tools and through direct experience. Building on more than 40 years of experience in training international professionals from different sectors, the Clingendael approach underscores that advocacy is not only a strategic process but also an interpersonal skill.

The ‘Advocacy and effective influencing’- training bridges the gap between the development of personal skills and the professional representation of your organisation. On a personal level, there is room to practice and develop strategic thinking, audience-specific communication and interpersonal influencing. At the organisational level, it improves your analysis, relationship management and advocacy skills.

Clingendael Academy has participants coming from over 60 countries and 5 continent and provides 20+ advocacy & effective influencing sessions year.

    •  Stakeholder analysis: identifying key players in the field and their positions.
  • Communication planning
    •  Theory of Change: operationalizing strategy and measuring its outcomes.
    •  Message formulation: reaching target audiences with tailormade messaging.
  • Interpersonal persuasion
    •  Persuasive communication: drivers for individual decision-making.
