Clingendael Academy continues its cooperation with diplomatic academies in Latin America. Clingendael Academy Director and negotiation expert Ron Ton recently delivered international negotiations training and capacity building seminars in Havana (Cuba) and in Santo Domingo (the Dominican Republic).

For the seminar in Havana, for which Mr. Ton teamed up with ms. Marriët Schuurman, Head of the UN SC task force of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, the participants were comprised of diplomatic staff. In Santo Domingo, the group consisted of diplomats, civil servants and the private sector. Both negotiation seminars focused on strategies, concepts, role plays and simulations. The aim was for participants to develop their personal skills and gain insights in the area of negotiation. Clingendael Academy

One of the simulations dealt with the resolution on conflict and hunger - of which the Netherlands was one of the pen holders - that was adopted in the United Nations Security Council in May 2018. The Dominican Republic is a non-permanent member of the UN SC for 2019-2020. This made the training in Santo Domingo timely - participants gained insights on how to prepare for negotiations, how to deal with stalemates and how to respond to pressure and stress.
