2025 has been an eventful year at the Clingendael Institute. We co-organised the NATO Public Forum, hosted a wide range of public events, welcomed many high-level visitors to our House, delivered Academy trainings both in the Netherlands and abroad, and conducted timely research to better inform policy makers and civil society.

Tim Walz advocates for industrial cooperation
In February, former US vice-presidential candidate and governor of the state of Minnesota Tim Walz visited Clingendael. He spoke about clean energy and, among other things, answered questions about the presidential elections he and former vice president Kamala Harris lost to Donald Trump in 2024.
'Don’t be on the menu, decide the menu' | Women mediators training
Past July, the Clingendael Academy brought together a group of women mediators from around the world for a training for women alumni of Clingendael’s mediation training programmes. In this video, participant Nina Asiimwe Byarugaba reflects on the Clingendael training and the need for women to be included in negotiation dialogue.
How China is reshaping the world
China is working to reshape the global order so that its own values and interests become legitimate — by building institutions like BRICS, changing norms, and using military power. As part of the ‘Your China Questions Answered’-series, Clingendael experts Ties Dams and Beatrice Gallelli unpack China’s vision for a China-led global order and what Europe can do in response.
Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama speaks candidly
On 17 November, Clingendael director Monika Sie welcomed Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama to the Institute. He engaged in a conversation with Clingendael researcher Wouter Zweers and an audience that included students, journalists, policymakers, and researchers. During the conversation, topics such as Albania’s EU candidate status, the country’s role in NATO, organised crime, and migration were discussed.
Why China doesn’t want Russia to lose in Ukraine
China presents itself as neutral and as a potential peacemaker in the war in Ukraine, but Beijing has reasons for not wanting Russia to lose. In this episode of the ‘Your China Questions Answered’-series, Clingendael researcher Kaspar Pucek and Patrik Andersson of the Swedish National China Centre unpack China’s strategy: trade, diplomacy, and military cooperation.

In deze aflevering van de ‘Jouw NAVO-vragen beantwoord’-serie beantwoord Clingendael's defensie in het arctisch gebied-onderzoeker Karen van Loon de vraag “Moet de NAVO een permanent arctisch commando oprichten, om dit gebied veilig te stellen voordat tegenstanders het overheersen?”
Wat is een weerbare samenleving?
Een van onze volgers stelde een vraag over civiele paraatheid, ook wel aangeduid als maatschappelijke weerbaarheid. In korte tijd groeide dat woord uit tot hét mantra onder politici en leden van de Nederlandse krijgsmacht die aangeven zich zorgen te maken over de veiligheid in Nederland. Inge Bryan houdt zich als veiligheidsexpert met dit thema bezig en beantwoord deze vraag.
Reka Conferentie 2025: de laatste ontwikkelingen in en om Oost-Europa
Tijdens de jaarlijkse Reka Conferentie gaan experts, beleidsmakers, ondernemers, journalisten en studenten in gesprek over de laatste ontwikkelingen in en om Oost-Europa. Afgelopen September vond de Conferentie plaats in Utrecht. De keynote speeches zijn hier te vinden.
‘LBB leerde mij lokale uitdagingen in internationale context zien'
Miriam Harika-Mouauzizz volgde in 2024 de Leergang Buitenlandse Betrekkingen op de Clingendael Academy. Ze wilde de internationale context waarin haar lokale werk in Rotterdam zich afspeelde doorgronden en verbeterde tegelijk haar vaardigheden in communicatie en onderhandelen.
Sam Rozemond seminar: Ambitie en armslag van Nederlands buitenlandbeleid
Deze bijeenkomst werd georganiseerd ter nagedachtenis aan het gedachtegoed van onderzoeker en voormalig adjunct-directeur van Instituut Clingendael Sam Rozemond. Tijdens het seminar stond de kernvraag van zijn denken centraal: wat wil Den Haag in zijn buitenlands beleid bereiken, en hoe?
