The Clingendael Institute has a strong track record in research and training on Europe and international security, including conflict and fragility. Our corporate mission is to contribute to a more stable world through our research and training output as well as through our function of a knowledge platform more generally.

The large flow of conflict-driven refugees towards Europe is living proof of an increasingly unstable world. In addition, host communities in regions or origin are having a hard time living up to the task of hosting millions of refugees. Through its new research and training project, Surviving2Thriving Clingendael aims to contribute to a view of refugees as assets rather than burdens. In more practical terms, the Institute wants to assist aid organisations that try to improve the living conditions of refugees and other vulnerable groups by providing them with evidence-based tools and skills.

Charitable organisations have an increasing demand for back-up capacity on knowledge and training, also at a local level. Surviving2Thriving meets this end and as such fits into our corporate aim to promote a more stable world.

The Clingendael Institute feels privileged to receive the support of the Nationale Postcode Loterij for Surviving2Thriving. Within this project we will identify productive and unproductive coping mechanisms of refugees and host communities in Lebanon. These insights will feed into the work of NGOs that improve the conditions of refugee settlement in the region by putting these coping mechanisms and refugees’ own agency centre stage. 

The Nationale Postcode Loterij was established in 1989 with the aim to support charitable organisations that contribute to a better world and environment. The Lottery raises funds and promotes the work of these charities.
