Daniel Scholten
Dr. Daniel Scholten is research associate at Clingendael's EU & Global Affairs Unit focusing on the EU's role in energy transitions, security, and geopolitics. He is also a university lecturer at the Environmental Policy Group of Wageningen University & Research, specializing in the geopolitics of the energy transition while having a broader interest in energy, resource, and climate matters (whether their systems, economics, security, policy, or scenarios) and governance of sustainability transitions. He aims to contribute to a smooth energy transition, both domestically and globally, through his research, teaching, and policy advice. He has published in prominent academic and popular outlets throughout the years and is a regular guest lecturer, expert advisor, and keynote speaker at a variety of academic, policy, and industry events and institutes.
Previously, Dr. Scholten was a visiting assistant professor at the Center for Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota, a senior strategic advisor on energy and sustainability at the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets, and assistant professor at Delft University of Technology. He was also part of the expert panel of the IRENA global commission on the geopolitics of energy transformation in 2018 and co-developer of the geopolitics of the energy transition simulation game “Geovania”.
His educational background combines MSc degrees in political science (Radboud University Nijmegen) and international & European relations (University of Amsterdam, with distinction) with a PhD in the economic organization of future energy systems (Delft University of Technology).
