Pieter Pauw

Associates are experts in their own field and contractually affiliated with Clingendael. Although associates are not employees of the Clingendael Institute, they comply with all policies that Clingendael staff do.

Dr Pieter Pauw is a senior researcher and policy advisor on international climate policy. More in particular, his work focuses on climate finance, climate policy (Nationally Determined Contributions in particular), adaptation and climate justice. Pieter published numerous scientific papers, book chapters, reports and op-eds and is a contributing author to the IPCC’s fifth assessment report and a lead author to the UNEP Adaptation Gap Reports.

He currently works for the FS-UNEP Centre at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. Previously, Pieter worked at the German Development Institute/Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) in Bonn. In this function, Pieter was also seconded to the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in the context of the UNFCCC climate conference in Bonn in 2017. In the past Pieter has also worked for the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM-VU) in Amsterdam.

Pieter holds a PhD from the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development (Utrecht University) on private sector financing of climate change adaptation in developing countries. He holds an MSc in ‘Environment and Resource Management’ from the VU University in Amsterdam.
