Clingendael Academy closed out 2023 with a remarkable cohort of 17 diplomats from West Africa and the Sahel region. This three-week intensive programme equipped the diplomats with the knowledge, skills, and networks to effectively address the region's complex challenges and promote peace, security, and prosperity.

Through interactive discussions, guest lectures by renowned experts, and bilateral cooperation efforts with key organisations, the programme delved into critical topics such as economic diplomacy, global health diplomacy, international law, transitional justice, and international climate governance. Participants gained a deeper understanding of these issues and developed strategies to apply them effectively in their respective roles.

A highlight of the programme was the opportunity for diplomats to engage with counterparts from leading institutions in the Netherlands and Brussels, such as the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the International Criminal Court, UNIDO, UNODC, the European Commission, the European External Action Service, and the Global Center of Adaptation. These interactions provided valuable insights into best practices and opened doors for further collaboration.

During a visit to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), participants engaged in insightful discussions with UN colleagues on how West Africa and the Sahel can harness their economic potential and become more competitive, dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable. This exchange focused on addressing current and future trends, including climate change and epidemics, and developing strategies to adapt and thrive in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
