Six months after the course our trainers talked extensively to a few alumni how they applied their new intercultural skills in practice.

Which methods will be used?
We believe that intercultural awareness is achieved when knowledge of behavioural pitfalls, cultural clusters, processes of interaction and increased sensitivity are combined, as visualised in the PACIS Model of Intercultural Competence.
- Pitfalls: behaviours and perspectives that decrease intercultural efficacy
- Awareness: awareness of how culture conditions our behaviour and interpretations of others
- Clusters: scientific approaches to the categorization of different types of cultures
- Interaction: insight into the influence of cultural conditioning in processes of social interaction
- Sensitivity: Recognizing cultural sensitivities and ability to sensibly adapt communication and behaviour to the context

Your own cultural bias
An essential precondition to effective intercultural communication is awareness of your own cultural bias. Using practical exercises, this course enhances the communicative skills that professionals need to ensure that their (non-)verbal messages are interpreted at intended.
- How do I see the world?
- And does this differ fundamentally from the way others around me view it?
This awareness is then coupled to an understanding of how different cultures around the world generally feel about and deal with issues such as hierarchy, time and relationship-building, amongst others, also known as cultural clusters through a reference to a variety of scientific sources.
Taking all this into account, participants are subsequently encouraged to reflect with each other on their own intercultural experiences through a structural methodology:
- How was culture of influence on what happened?
- And how can it inform me to effectively handle similar situations in the future?
Before the course, participants are asked to specify their learning objectives/ intercultural competences, so that during the course trainers can accurately facilitate learning in those areas that the participants are looking to improve.

Meet the Trainer
Isabel coordinates, develops, and teaches programmes for foreign diplomats and international relations professionals, with a focus on intercultural communication and mediation. As an intercultural expert, she aims to improve the way international professionals deal with multilingual and multicultural working environments.

All course materials will be provided prior to the course via an individual online learning environment. Participants do not require to order any materials in advance.
Costs for this training are €1.800,-. You can qualify for a 10% discount if five or more people from the same organisation apply.
This course does not require any particular prior training. The working language of this course will be English. However if all the participants are Dutch, the course will be held Dutch.

The course definitely facilitates self-reflection and has given plenty food for thought and observation. The course itself was an intercultural experience because of the composition of the group: different nationalities, professional backgrounds, age and gender.
