Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic is no longer dominating news headlines, but is not yet over. The world’s response to COVID-19 has laid bare the vulnerability of societies and health systems, further unveiling structural shortcomings in pandemic preparedness and response. Currently, the world is looking for ways to avoid a new pandemic, with talks around creating a new pandemic instrument or treaty to avoid and better address outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The Netherlands is actively taking part in these negotiations, while also reviewing its role in the global health arena through the development of its own Global Health Strategy.

This is the first on a series of online events that will explore the complexities around the future of global health. We will discuss the key areas of debate on global health while contextualizing this within the ongoing debates in the Netherlands.

In this webinar, we will raise questions such as: what are currently the largest challenges in global health and what are the potential changes when a new pandemic treaty is agreed upon? Is a multilateral approach still feasible in light of the heightened tensions among great powers over the war in Ukraine? The conversation will further delve into the role of international institutions and the private sector in the field of global health. It will discuss which lessons can be drawn from the pandemic and what can be done to sustain global health efforts now that COVID-19 seems to have taken a back seat in the global discourse. During the online event opportunity will be given for interaction with the audience through polls and a Q&A session.
