The Clingendael Academy launched its 5th edition of the training programme Blue Diplomacy: Enhancing sustainable economic development of the oceans. The course hosts twenty mid-career diplomats and experts from various ministries from the Small Islands and Developing States (SIDS). The participants come from the Caribbean, the Pacific, Africa and the Indian Ocean region.

What is Blue economy and diplomacy? How to deal with the consequences of climate change, such as the rising sea level? How does The Netherlands approach this issue, and can we learn from them? What are the challenges and the opportunities of sustainable development and governance?

These are just some of the questions the training programme and participants are exploring during this two-week training. In doing so, the participants will engage in in-depth discussions with various experts from different sectors. The participants will also attend training sessions to build on negotiation skills, simulation on the Sustainable Developments Goals and pay a visit to Deltares, an independent institute for applied research in the field of water and subsurface management.

Training Clingendael Academy

Each country has its own specific challenges relating to climate change and the sustainable exploitation of ocean resources. However, many of the solutions and opportunities can be found in international and regional collaboration. This course aims at enhancing participants’ knowledge and skills within different thematic areas in order to implement this collaboration, both at domestic level as in international fora on climate and water and ocean sustainability.
