Within the framework of the European Civilian Training Initiative (EUCTI), Clingendael Academy was invited to organize and co-fund a training mission on Intercultural Communication to Kyiv, Ukraine. The training was the first in-mission activity within the framework after the pandemic outbreak. The programme was developed by the EUCTI consortium in coordination with EUAM Ukraine, and took place on November 22 and 23, 2021. Next to EUAM Ukraine, participants represented the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine and NATO Professional Development Programme in Ukraine.

The trainers offered a theoretical framework based on the PACIS model of intercultural capacity. Participants heightened their intercultural awareness, learned about theory of cultural dimensions as presented in academic research and practiced relevant intercultural skills and sensitivity. Moreover, participants were guided in their understanding of intercultural communication processes and the risk of intercultural miscommunication and conflict. Finally, participants were presented with concrete tools and strategies to overcome intercultural hurdles and smoothen communication across cultural borders.

The training content was offered in the form of several interactive exercises, such as bilateral roleplays and intercultural negotiation exercises. At the end of the programme, the participants were invited to use the theory presented to reflect on their own professional experiences in intercultural communication and cooperation.

We look back on a successful and fruitful experience for all parties and hope to continue our cooperation with EUCTI on similar trainings in the future.
