Connected from Valetta, New York, The Hague and Geneva, 20 staff members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malta received an extensive tailor-made training to prepare them for their UN Security Council (UNSC) membership.

Malta is a candidate for UNSC-membership and is strongly committed to expand and deepen its diplomatic reach and impact on themes such children and armed conflict. If Malta is elected by the General Assembly in June this year, they will be a member in the period 2023-2024.

A mixture of diplomatic and academic experts

The training contained a mixture of contributions by academic experts and practitioners. The group, together with leading academic experts, dived deep into the workings, history and challenges of the UNSC: What does the UN Charter say? How has the role of elected members evolved? What are the trends related to sanctions regimes?

"Excellent line-up of speakers as well as presentations overall. I particularly liked the balance between the theoretical part and the more practical side."'

They also spoke extensively with practitioners and diplomats in the field. Learning from people who experienced firsthand how the UNSC really works. The lines of communication between the capital, New York and embassies. Pitfalls, do’s and don’ts of working in a fast-paced and demanding environment.

Clingendael

“I think that the programme was well tailor-made for Malta's needs in preparation for Malta's UNSC membership.”

Together with one of Clingendael's trainers, the diplomats did a case-study exercise to get familiar with peacekeeping and the use of force as means of action of the UNSC, as well as R2P as a concept.

We wish Malta the best of luck in their UN Security Council membership.
