Vera Kranenburg is a Research Fellow at the Clingendael China Centre and the Secretary of the Dutch China Knowledge Network. Her work focuses on Chinese foreign relations and European China policy. She also writes the Silk Road Headlines Newsletter published by the Clingendael Institute.

Before joining Clingendael, Vera worked as a staff member focused on the Belt and Road Research Platform at the LeidenAsiaCentre. Vera graduated with a master’s degree in China Studies: Politics and International Relations from the Yenching Academy of Peking University. Her thesis focused on the Securitization of China in Europe, which included analysis of the French and German Indo-Pacific strategies and the Dutch and Swedish China strategies. During her studies she also interned at the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) in Berlin and at the Clingendael China Centre. Vera graduated previously with a BA (Honours) in World Politics from Leiden University College, The Hague. She also completed a minor focused on Asian Studies at Yale-NUS College in Singapore. Her BA thesis focused on ASEAN-China relations and the South China Sea. After graduation she was awarded a scholarship to study Mandarin Chinese in Taipei for six months.

Vera’s research interests include Chinese Foreign Policy, Indo-Pacific Security, Belt and Road Initiative, EU-China relations and Southeast Asian politics.
