Caspar Wanders joined the Clingendael Institute as an Academy Project Fellow in March 2022. In this capacity, Caspar trains groups on topics related to Sustainable Development – including economic diplomacy and trade promotion, international negotiations, energy transition and climate diplomacy. Caspar coordinates and develops a variety of training programs for different audiences, such as foreign diplomats, humanitarian workers, private sector professionals, and government officials.
Working with The Netherlands Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Caspar has supported the set-up of the Greater North Sea Basin Initiative (GNSBI) from ideation workshops in 2022 to Inter-Ministerial Summits in 2023 and 2024. The GNSBI provides a platform for co-governance internationally (with 9 different countries involved) and across various domains (Environment, Fisheries and Energy).
Having trained multiple diplomatic groups on the topic of Climate Diplomacy, Caspar developed a programme and trained the Lake Victoria Basin Commission in Bujumbura in 2023 and the IGAD Climate Security Workgroup in Nairobi in 2024 on the topic of Climate and Security.
Moreover, Caspar has trained groups of Energy Professionals across the MENA on the Energy Transition in programmes in The Hague, Tunis and Amman. He has trained South African diplomats in Pretoria, Omani diplomats in Muscat and others on the topic of Economic Diplomacy and Trade Promotion.
Prior to joining Clingendael, Caspar was a programme manager with Forward•Inc, supporting refugee entrepreneurs across Europe. He also worked as a journalist in South Asia and at Shell in Mozambique. Previously, Caspar worked with Dutch and Rwandan agro-business and farmers at the Netherlands Embassy in Kigali, Rwanda. He did further work in food security, when working with BASF on Food Fortification in Germany. Caspar holds a Master’s degree in Conflict Resolution and Governance (University of Amsterdam) and a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (University of Exeter).
