Ornella Moderan is an Research Associate Fellow with Clingendael’s Conflict Research Unit. Her work focuses on political and security dynamics in the Sahel and West Africa. She has an acute interest in gender and women’s agency in the (re)production of violence, and her work is guided by an intersectional feminist commitment to examining power relations. Ornella brings expertise in Political Transitions and Gender & Security.

Before joining Clingendael, Ornella headed the Sahel programme and Bamako office of the Institute for Security Studies, leading a professional team of researchers covering issues ranging from political dynamics of post-coup transitions, to options for dialogue with proscribed groups. An experienced practitioner, she led the borderlands peacebuilding programme of the Danish Demining Group in the Sahel, and the Mali country programme of the Danish Refugee Council. Earlier, Ornella worked with DCAF, leading publications development and supporting civil society, human rights defenders and media actors to structure societal demand for security sector accountability in several countries.

Holding a Masters in International Security from Sciences-Po Paris, and a graduate degree in Criminology from the University of Grenoble, Ornella is a member of the Advisory Council of the Knowledge Platform Security and Rule of Law, and a Stanford DHSF fellow on democracy, development and the rule of law.
