Introduction

This public panel was part of an Expert's Workshop, hosted by the Faculty of Law at Lund University, the Geneva Water Hub, and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Public panel which reflected on the way forward to overcome the main obstacles when dealing with water issues in the aftermath of armed conflict and examines the potential of water in peacebuilding processes.

The aim of this panel discussion was to share the outcome of the two-day Expert's Workshop to broader audiences and involve interested researchers and students in the academic community. Visiting Research Fellow Tobias von Lossow delivered a presentation on 'The control of dams in recent armed conflicts', shedding light on the following three topics:

  • the weaponisation of water in Syria and Iraq;
  • water infrastructures at risk in post-conflict settings, and
  • potential entry points for protecting dams and water facilities.
