Max joined the Clingendael Institute in 2018. He works as EU Programme Fellow at Clingendael Academy where he trains a wide range of professionals in EU decision-making and EU negotiations. He specializes in EU migration and competition policy as well as the better regulation ambition of the European Commission. 

Max has provided skills trainings and EU seminars to over 1.000 multinational professionals. He has trained diplomats from all 27 EU member states as part of the European Diplomatic Programme. Furthermore, he has trained diplomats and other civil servants from 3 EU member states in how to effectively prepare for their Presidency of the Council of the EU. He lectures regularly at the Netherlands School of Public Administration in The Hague and provides EU accession and interest representation trainings to a diversity of stakeholders.

Besides his EU-activities, since 2019 he coordinates the annual seven-week training programme for new Dutch diplomats ‘IBBZ’. 

Before joining Clingendael, Max worked as policy advisor at Leiden University and Erasmus University Rotterdam, in addition to working as a freelance writer. He holds an MSc in Political Science from Leiden University and a BA in History from Erasmus University Rotterdam.
