Max is an Academy Fellow at the Clingendael Institute. In this capacity he coordinates, develops and implements a wide variety of diplomatic training programs for Dutch and foreign diplomats, as well as other multinational experts and specialists.
As a trainer, he specializes in the work processes, dynamics and institutional capacities of the European Union. His experience working in and with Brussels is instrumental in doing so. Besides that, he is an expert in personal effectiveness, delivering trainings on subjects ranging from public speaking and overcoming resistance to effective influencing.
Max has provided trainings to over 750 multinational civil servants and diplomats on the EU, as well as many other working professionals and students, civil society and mediators. Additionally, he has been involved in providing trainings for EU-agency Frontex, the European Diplomatic Programme and trainings for Portugal and Slovenia on how to prepare for and run the Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Prior to joining the Clingendael Institute, Max worked as a special advisor at Leiden University and Erasmus University Rotterdam, additionally working as a freelance public speaking trainer and translator.
He holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from Leiden University and a Bachelor’s degree in History from Erasmus University Rotterdam. During his studies, he worked for the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin and the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focusing on European affairs and Human Security, respectively.
