This policy brief is inspired by the Interactive brainstorm on Innovative Thinking in Conflict Management, which endeavored to inspire creative thinking on this topic beyond the use of force through gathering together actors from diverse sectors. It provides recommendations for professionals engaged in research, policy and interventions in the areas of conflict prevention, management and resolution.

The author provides three recommendations to help move beyond the status quo and to create better ways to address violent conflicts:

  • Imagining a worldwide conflict resolution system beyond the UN Security Council, if meaningful reform of this body cannot be achieved.
  • Open-mindedness to increasing self-determination for conflict-affected communities.
  • Fostering the creation of cooperative and secure international and domestic relationship dynamics.
