As part of the six-week training course ‘Indonesia in World Politics’, Clingendael Academy welcomed the Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) to discuss instruments to support democratic governance structures. IDEA worked on a project in Myanmar in cooperation with the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and the Club de Madrid. During this discussion, the group - consisting of 20 participating junior diplomats from Indonesia - discussed  lessons learned on democratization.

The Indonesian diplomats shared how their government supports democratization in the ASEAN region, such as by means of the multilateral Bali Democracy Forum (BDF).

Training "Indonesia in World Politics"

Since 2004, the Clingendael Institute has had the pleasure to annually host Indonesian junior diplomats for the diplomatic training course ‘Indonesia in World Politics’. This course pays attention to both academic knowledge and practical skills. Subjects such as ‘International Law and Human Rights’, ‘ASEAN and the EU in Regional Cooperation’ and ‘Global Governance, the UN and trends in International Security’ are tackled, and skills ranging from intercultural communication and diplomatic negotiations to writing speeches and policy briefs are trained.

Moreover, the Indonesian diplomats visit institutions in The Netherlands and Belgium, such as the International Criminal Court, the European Parliament and NATO. By doing so, the Clingendael Academy attempts to organize a thorough and diverse course that provides the junior diplomats with the skills needed to navigate through diplomatic waters.
