Looking back at Academy's 2025 highlights so far

Clingendael Academy is one of the world's largest independent training centres for diplomats and professionals working internationally. In 2025, Academy continues to train diplomats, civil servants, humanitarian negotiators, peace negotiators, mediators and other professionals from all corners of the world. From trainees to trainers - humanitarian negotiators step into their trainer roles

Training of Trainers Nairobi

 

Humanitarian assistance plays a crucial role in protecting civilians from the consequence of conflict and disaster. Clingendael trainers travelled to Nairobi to teach alumni to deliver negotiation trainings tailored to their local context. Our Training-of-Trainers programme helps expand the reach of negotiation skills across the humanitarian sector and support the broader goal of localisation.

Clingendael Academy contributes to EU–Indonesia cyber crisis communication workshop

EU-Indonesia Cyber Crisis

 

The cyber crisis communication workshop brought together 26 participants from various Indonesian government institutions in Bandung. They took part in an innovative digital ‘escape room’ simulation, which placed them under realistic time pressure in crisis management teams to respond to an escalating cyber crisis.

Fruitful training completed for South American diplomats

For three weeks, the junior diplomats from South America delved into key cross-cutting policy themes that face their region and the world today. One of the highlights included participating in the ‘world café’ on regional cooperation and visiting European institutions in Brussels.

Empowering youth peacebuilders in the Horn of Africa

Youth peacebuilders

 

In South Sudan, Sudan, and Ethiopia, youth are often excluded from formal political and peace processes, despite making up around 70% of the population. To help shift this, Clingendael Academy and IPHRD Africa brought together 20 young peacebuilders in Nairobi to strengthen their skills and offer a space for networking and alliance building.

Clingendael trains senior Dutch officials on EU decision-making

May 2025

 

Senior civil servants from various Dutch ministries and executive agencies participated in the EU course Inzicht in Europa. They explored the functioning of the European institutions, the Dutch position in Brussels, and how to exert influence within EU legislative procedures. The course concluded with a visit to the heart of EU policy-making: Brussels, to engage with Dutch professionals working in and around the EU.

Serving as a United Nations peacekeeper requires more than just operational readiness—it demands a deep understanding of the region of deployment and expertise in navigating complex environments. Conflict sensitivity, intercultural communication, and managing disinformation are among the crucial skills peacekeepers need to operate effectively.

Diplomats dive deep in blue economy training towards a healthy Indian and Pacific Ocean

Clingendael Academy brought together diplomats from the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and coastal countries who face shared environmental and economic challenges. The group sharpened their diplomatic skills and deepened their expertise in the Blue Economy – a concept focused on the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, enhanced livelihoods, and environmental preservation.

Clingendael trains UN Experts in mediation support

April 2025

UN

Clingendael Academy delivered a five-day training course in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aimed at strengthening the mediation support capacities of United Nations staff. The course was tailored to experienced UN staff, providing tools and knowledge to help set up and guide mediation initiatives in conflict-affected settings.
