Inleiding

The Clingendael Russia & Eastern Europe Centre and the Polish Institute for International Affairs Brussels Office (PISM) are pleased to invite you to our webinar.

In the past four years, the President of the United States withdrew the US from a number of multilateral security arrangements and voiced doubts about the trans-Atlantic security guarantee. Fearing even further steps towards US unilateralism, Europe held its breath to await the outcome of the US elections. Now that Joe Biden emerged victorious, European political elites breathed a sigh of relief. However, to what extent is that relief justified? Even though the president-elect is a lifelong transatlanticist, Biden will not be an easy partner. Like Obama before Trump, the next US president will make it clear that Europe needs to contribute to fairer burden-sharing in NATO.

Hence, the question emerges what the future of the Alliance will look like.

  • Will the election of the 46th US president lead to stronger co-operation with  European partners?
  • How will the Biden presidency impact the trans-Atlantic relations?
  • What will be the consequences for NATO?
  • What is the future of the defence and deterrence posture in the Eastern Flank?
  • How does this relate to recent European efforts to implement the concept of European Strategic Autonomy (ESA)?
