Consequences and Expectations for Dutch-German Relations

It’s the end of an era: after 16 years, Chancellor Angela Merkel has stepped down and post-Merkel Germany might look markedly different. The new government of SPD, Greens, and FDP, the so-called Ampel Coalition, takes office with the motto ‘Mehr Fortschritt wagen’. But to what extent can European progress be expected, and what would this mean?

As its close neighbour, Germany’s political future has a major impact on the Netherlands. The new German government will have the power to adjust the course of the EU, and is expected to push for more ‘European sovereignty’ in tandem with the French. Germany’s EU-politics and geopolitical stance will have unavoidable consequences for Dutch foreign policy. How will Berlin and The Hague navigate these changes? And what does this imply for the Dutch-German relationship?

The Clingendael Institute would like to welcome you to an online discussion about these issues with the following panel:

  • Cyrill Jean Nunn, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in The Hague
  • Otto Fricke, Member of the Bundestag, Freie Demokratische Partei
  • Kati Piri, Member of the House of Representatives of the Netherlands, PvdA
  • Nicolai von Ondarza, Head Research Division EU/Europe, SWP Berlin
  • Jana Puglierin, Head Berlin Office, European Council on Foreign Relations
  • René Cuperus, Senior Associate Fellow, the Clingendael Institute

The discussion will be moderated by Rem Korteweg, Senior Research Fellow, the Clingendael Institute.
