Outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte visited the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV) and met with participants who successfully completed a training programme on international law conducted by the Clingendael Academy.

Rutte handed out certificates to the participants in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi during a conference on international law and order at sea. The training took place in the framework of a multiannual programme Train the trainers on international law in maritime related areas, that Clingendael conducts with the DAV. It focuses on deepening understanding on the intricate realms of the law of the sea and strengthening training capacities.

The training consists of a comprehensive mix of components, says Clingendael Academy Programme Fellow Amanda Klemann. ''By blending knowledge, practical skills training and capacity building, we enhance the participants’ understanding of the international legal system.''

 The Law of the Sea is of great importance and for coastal states in particular. The maintenance of international peace and security and the stability of the global economy are heavily dependent on the order and stability of the seas. Many global challenges revolve around sustainable use of the oceans, such as climate change and the loss of biodiversity.

 Head of the diplomatic training programme at the Clingendael Academy Adriaan Zondag is proud of the collaboration with the DAV. ''Strengthening the skills and competencies of international professionals is the core expertise of the Clingendael Academy. Our cooperation underlines our joint commitment to advancing the understanding of the law of the sea and the fostering of diplomatic excellence.''
