The Clingendael Academy conducted various training courses for diplomats, civil servants, humanitarian negotiators, peace negotiators, and mediators worldwide this year. Here's a look back at some of the Academy's highlights in 2023.
Dutch PM Rutte presents Clingendael Academy certificates in Hanoi
Outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte visited the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV) and met with participants who successfully completed a training programme on international law conducted by the Clingendael Academy.
Training Professionals in their Intercultural Competences
Clingendael Academy welcomed a diverse group of professionals for the open registration course on Intercultural Communication. Diving into the Clingendael PACIS Model of Intercultural Competence, participants increased their intercultural awareness and were equipped with skills to effectively navigate between different cultural contexts.
Humanitarian Negotiation Training supporting the Ukraine regional refugee response
Under the framework of the 2023 Regional Refugee Response Plan, Clingendael Academy and UN Women organised a three-day negotiation training in Bucharest, Romania. The emphasis was on empowering female-led civil society organisations active in the humanitarian and refugee response to Ukraine's invasion. The event aimed to improve the skills and expertise of 19 female leaders from Ukraine, Moldova, Poland, and Romania, and was the first of its kind at Clingendael.
Mediating For Peace: Skills Training for African Practitioners
A group of 15 African practitioners engaged in mediation and peace processes on the African continent travelled to the Hague to partake in a training programme focused on enhancing their negotiation and mediation skills. The training was organised in collaboration with the African Union Commission and FemWise-Africa. Differing from the past six Clingendael training programmes, which primarily catered to African women mediators, this edition welcomed a diverse group comprising both male and female mediators alongside youth representatives.
Supporting North Macedonia’s NATO integration through training
How can we train Ministry of Defense and Army professionals to be effective ‘defense diplomats’? And how do we even know what to train them on? As the country joined NATO in March 2020, North Macedonia’s high-level military, MOD civilians and training institutes encountered a set of professional challenges very familiar to other Allies. From 2021-2023 Clingendael Academy is partnering with the Joseph Kruzel Training Centre (JKTC) and the Public Affairs Regional Centre (PARC) in Skopje to support the further integration of North Macedonia’s Ministry of Defense and the Army into NATO. To this end, we work with our partners to build their defense training capacity.
Training for South American diplomats successfully completed
A group of 16 junior diplomats from South America came to the Clingendael Institute for a three-week diplomatic training programme. The course focused on strengthening their diplomatic skills, deepening their knowledge on relevant regional and international issues, and familiarising the diplomats with policies in the Netherlands and the EU.
