Bart van den Berg is the Programme Lead of the Clingendael Security and Defence Programme. His research focuses on international security and defence, with a particular emphasis on military operations, capabilities, emerging technologies, and cybersecurity.

He has held various management, operational, and analytical roles within the Dutch government and security sector. Prior to rejoining Clingendael in 2025, he served as lead intelligence analyst and crisis manager at the Dutch National Cyber Security Centre. 

From 2019 to 2022, Bart worked at the Clingendael Academy, where he developed and delivered international security training programmes, and was involved in several capacity-building initiatives. He trained senior military officers, diplomats, security professionals, and civil servants from a diverse range of countries, both overseas and in the Netherlands.

Trained as an infantry officer, Bart spent six years in the Royal Netherlands Army, leading military operations in demanding environments. In 2018, he was deployed to Lithuania as part of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence, serving with an international mechanized battlegroup.

Bart holds a master’s degree in economics and business from the Rotterdam School of Management and Leiden University.
