What are the newest international political developments on the various continents? What are some of the geopolitical consequences in the area of energy? What are the threats of cyber operations? What will the EU look like after Brexit? The Course on International Politics offers a wonderful opportunity to become acquainted with international politics in a brief time frame. Deeper insights into the subject matter are ensured by analysis of current international issues.

During eight Monday afternoons from 14:00 until 16:45, some of the most important themes in international politics will be discussed. By this you will broaden and deepen your knowledge in this field, enabling you to participate in discussions and putting news items in a broader context.

The course is open to anyone with a specific interest in current international political developments. There are no entry requirements.

What will you learn?

The training aims to provide information and an up-to-date understanding of the main issues of international politics. 

By the end of the training course, participants will be able to:
• analyse the main themes, persons and organisations in international politics;
• identify the major trends and relations in international politics;
• put international political developments in a broader context.


You will meet the leading researchers, experts and opinion-makers of the Clingendael Institute. At the same time, you will meet guest lecturers and practitioners from the (policy) field. Speakers from previous courses included Tony van der Togt (Russia expert), Willem Post (US expert), Prof. Dr. Jan Rood (EU expert) and Sico van der Meer (cyber security expert). Subjects are introduced in depth by experts within the field and concluded with discussions on each subject. Moreover, a brief introduction on methods like scenario planning are given by our Clingendael experts.

Clingendael Academy provides participants with access to our online learning environment - Moodle - where you will find, amongst others, study materials that you can study in advance or afterwards.

What else you need to know

There is no need for pre-course study. Study is limited to the length of the course, which is 8 half-day sessions. A short course reading if often requested outside of class hours in advance of a specific session.

At the end of the course all participants will receive a certificate.

You can qualify for a 10% discount if 5 or more people from the same organisation apply.
