What is the impact of the US-China trade war on the global economy?

During this session, Dr. Abdul Abiad, Director of the Asian Development Bank’s Macroeconomic Research Division, presented the September 2019 Asian Development Outlook Update which covers recent developments, forecasts, and risks in Asia.

Experts are increasingly gloomy about the overall state of the global economy. European countries are increasingly facing economic headwinds, including the possibility of a no-deal Brexit and are concerned about possible US tariffs on its automobile exports. In Asia, slowing Chinese growth is reason for concern but a handful of economies are projected to boom as foreign companies seek to diversify their supply chain and escape tariffs imposed on China.

How will European and Asian economies be affected by deteriorating trade relations between the world’s two largest economies? How might the trade war develop and are European and Asian economies headed for another global recession?

The roundtable was moderated by Rem Korteweg, Senior Research Fellow at the Clingendael Institute.
