In June 2023, Clingendael Academy organised a specialised economic security training for the first economic security diplomats of the Netherlands. A three-day training course was developed in close collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

During the programme, the diplomats engaged in discussions on the application and development of various policy tools. While many of these instruments have a protective side to them, ample time was also spent on the promote-and-shape side of economic diplomacy. Additionally, the programme offered a chance for Dutch diplomats and policy officers working in this field to exchange best practices and insights. Overall, the training connected the latest developments in the field of economic security to the practice of diplomats.
