On January 28, the LeidenAsiaCentre organises an interactive discussion on the role of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in China’s current geopolitical ambitions and how this initiative is being shaped in different regions around the world, inspired by the book 'Global Perspectives on China’s Belt and Road Initiative'Join us (online) for this session at De Balie, where our regional experts will discuss with each other and with the audience how recent developments, including the pandemic and changing local attitudes, affect the ways in which the BRI is unfolding. A team of 12 researchers, brought together by the LeidenAsiaCentre, has taken a global perspective in assessing how the most influential investment initiative in recent memory, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), has developed since its start in 2013. This globe-spanning strategy has reshaped local economies and regional networks, and has become a contested subject for scholars and practitioners alike. How should we make sense of the complex interactions that the BRI has enabled? Understanding these processes requires truly global perspectives alongside careful attention to the role that local actors play in giving shape to individual BRI projects. This assessment has resulted in the edited volume “Global Perspectives on China’s Belt and Road Initiative“, which will be published open access on the same day by Amsterdam University Press (AUP).
