Throughout eight weeks in May and June, the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration organised their annual Summer Course ‘Diplomacy in the Audit’, which took place online this year. Each week, a two-day edition of the summer course was broadcasted live from the premises of Nyenrode Business University.

In this summer course, participants were asked to reflect on the challenges they face in their everyday working practices, and were supported in developing a skillset that allows them to deal with said challenges. In this light, Clingendael Academy was asked to contribute by delivering trainings on diplomatic skills.

The Academy provided eight half day sessions to approximately 75 participants per training, leading up to over 600 participants in total. In close cooperation with the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration and Nyenrode Business University, a programme was developed, tailored to the work of the Dutch tax officer.

The trainings focused on the diplomatic skills needed in the professional context of a tax officer. The programme was built-up around the five areas of the Clingendael Model of Intercultural Capacity ‘PACIS’: Pitfalls, Awareness, Clusters, Interaction and Sensitivity.

We look back on eight successful sessions, in which we aimed to better equip participants with diplomatic skills.
