Christiaan is a Senior Academy Fellow at the Clingendael Institute. He is an experienced trainer and a specialist in (international) multilateral negotiations and mediation with a particular focus on consensus building in conflict settings. In addition, he manages the Clingendael Academy’s EU-trainings cluster and its portfolio of open registration courses.

Within the Academy, Christiaan develops and conducts training programmes for the multi-annual project ‘Negotiation Training as a Conflict Resolution Instrument’  for representatives of groups in conflict, (insider) mediators, and mediation support units. Since 2016, he has also been a trainer in Clingendael’s Humanitarian Negotiations Program, working predominantly with front-line negotiators on access modalities, and with HQ-level management on negotiation structures and mandate creation.

With the Academy’s EU-team, Christiaan also develops and provides many trainings on the functioning of the EU, effective influencing in Brussels, and how to conduct an effective EU Presidency.

Before joining Clingendael, Christiaan held several positions in Brussels, among others at the European Parliament and at a political lobbying firm. He holds an LLM in European Law from Leiden University and a Postgrad in Competition Law from King’s College London.
