Francesco Mascini has been an Associate Fellow at the Clingendael Institute since November 2021. He has joined Clingendael after a long career as a Dutch diplomat working in Africa and conflict areas, like the Great Lakes Region and the Palestinian Territories.

His latest assignment was as regional coordinator for migration in Maghreb and Sahel, based in Tunis. Francesco has travelled along migration routes from the desert in Niger to the detention centres in Libya. He has established close working relationships with local governments and international organisations like UNHCR and IOM.

Francesco holds a MSc in Political Science from Free University in Amsterdam. He has a vast experience in working for NGO’s, like Oxfam/Novib. He has been a political correspondent for NOS radio, a spokesperson to minister for Development Cooperation, Bert Koenders and a development advisor at the Ministry of Defence.
